On November 25, 2007 Megan Small was returning to college from Thanksgiving break when another driver crossed the centerline of the roadway and hit Megan head-on, killing her instantly. In the 45 minutes before the crash, the opposing driver had placed 7 phone calls and sent/received 15 text messages. He was receiving a text at the time he crossed the centerline.
Megan graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2004 from Langham Creek High School in Houston, Texas. She was a senior biochemistry major at Baylor University in Waco and would have graduated in May 2008. Megan was a member of The Golden Key International Honor Society, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and was on the Baylors’ Academic Dean’s List every semester. She was an active member in the Association of Pre-Pharmacy Students.
Megan gave her heart, soul, and time as a volunteer at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She loved photography and enjoyed scrap booking.
Following Megan’s tragic death, her mother, Patricia Small, lobbied Texas lawmakers annually to enact a ban on texting while driving. Patricia’s efforts paid off when Texas passed the legislation in 2017, 10 years after Megan’s death.
