How Can We Keep Our EMS safe?

Emergency Medical Service (EMS) personnel arrive at crash scenes to save lives. They know firsthand the devastation that comes from inattentive driving. Too often, they become victims on the road while working at crash scenes by other drivers. And sometimes, as a result of their own distracted driving, they and their patients being transported are injured or killed. NHSTA estimates that there are 4500 ambulance crashes annually. The safety of EMS personnel was the focus of the 41st Annual Western PA Emergency Medical Service Institute held at Seven Springs Resort [ ….]

Vlogging: Just Another Unnecessary Distraction

Everyone knows the dangers of texting while driving. An average text consumes about five seconds of a driver’s attention and at 55 mph, a driver can travel the length of a football field without even looking at the road. But there is less attention paid to the phenomenon of #VloggingWhileDriving which is made ‘easy’ with smartphone applications, like SnapChat. NTSB to Host Multi-Modal Roundtable, “Disconnect from Deadly Distractions” – Open to the Public

On Tuesday, March 31st, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be holding its first muilti-model roundtable discussion,”Disconnect From Deadly Distractions” in its offices in Washington, D.C. The roundtable will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., is open to the public and will also be webcast live. Some 40 different modal experts, researchers, advocates, educators, industry, and others will share knowledge and experiences in their disciplines, and discuss innovative solutions aimed at reducing deaths and injuries due to distraction. AAA Study: Distracted Driving May be Involved in More Teen Crashes Than Previously Thought – 58% Caused by Driver Distraction

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released the results from its most recent distracted driving study and the results are troubling. Quantifying the extent of the distracted driving problem has been difficult. There is no blood test for distracted driving and many folks just don’t admit they were distracted at the time of a crash.
