Educators are creative in how they follow-up with students after the distracted driving presentations. One teacher from teacher from Essex High School sent us notes and stories from students who attended the presentation and wanted to share some of what they learned. Below is one story which stood out demonstrating what the students are learning.
Time to Look Up
On a two lane country road, I’m driving my brother and his friends to their soccer game. I have four 8 year-olds in the car. It is an easy drive and not very far away on the back roads, so my mom trusts me to drive safely with the kids. I am on a straight road and I can see far ahead. I notice the car coming towards me on the other side crossing the center lane. As he gets closer his face is down, he is probably looking on his cell phone. I have to make a decision! Either wait until the driver looks up, swerve away from him, or come to a halt and take the chance of impact. I have four kids in the car and all I can think about is who is going to get hit the hardest. I look to the side of the road to swerve off, but there is nothing safe. I start praying! I slow down to take the impact, but he looks up with fear on his face and swerves back into his lane. I am relieved and thankful. This story may be fiction but it could happen to anyone. —David
