AT&T has designated Sept. 19 as No Text on Board Pledge Day as part of the company’s public awareness campaign, It Can Wait. The organization’s website asks people to pledge through social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter to never text and drive.

According to the website, pledging today means that, “No text message, email, website or video is worth the risk of endangering my life or the lives of others on the road. I pledge to never text and drive and will take action to educate others about the dangers of texting while driving. No text is worth the risk. It can wait.”

AT&T is a leader in organizations against texting and driving. They have partnered with National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and more than 140 more organizations to raise awareness that using a cell phone while driving endangers lives on the road.

While texting is arguably the most dangerous, it is only one of many distractions while driving. As a reminder, any action that takes a driver’s eyes off of the road, even for a single second, is a source of distracted driving. Distracted driving accidents can happen because a driver was simply reaching for something or even just talking to another passenger. As people take the pledge today, they should also think about all of the other things that may be a distraction and try to eliminate those habits, too.
